Finncare Inc

Finncare is the only Aged Care Facility in Australia catering to the Finnish people. The facility is located east of Brisbane at Thornlands in sunny South East Queensland. The site consists of three and a half hectares of land. Our retirement community of Finncare Villas, comprising mainly two bedroom villas, occupy around one and a half hectares, with the remaining two hectares for the residential aged care facility and our Home Support Services.

On our Thornlands site we have 23 spacious independent living units located in our retirement village complex.

Our residential aged care facility has 45 places, 44 permanent aged care and 1 respite care bed. Of the total 45 places allocated, 15 are dedicated to the care of residents with memory support needs.

Finncare Home Support Services cares for approximately 500 individual clients in the greater Brisbane area who collectively receive more than 22,000 hours of service each year.

Our state of the art commercial grade kitchen provides thousands of fresh-cooked meals every year to residents, day respite clients, staff and visitors. It also provides Finnish baked delicacies such as Karelian Pie and Korvapuusti (a type of cinnamon bun) to our famous Poro Café, which is located at the front of the property and open 6 days a week to the public.

Finncare provides work experience for many students from Finland in the area or nursing, physiotherapy and social services. This gives our residents and clients wonderful opportunities to interact with younger people from ‘home’. These students also offer wide-ranging support to our hard working staff. Students live onsite in Student House and participate in the life of the facility.

Now more than 30,000 people living in Australi claim Finnish heritage and of these about 7,000 – 8,000 were born in Finland. This group is spread throughout all states and territories of Australia. Finncare draws residents to our facility in Thornlands from all corners of Australia.

Currently 27 per cent of Finns in Australia are over the age of 65. Finncare provides an invaluable service to this group, giving individuals many choices in care as they age.
